Magister Lvcentinvs

The Magister Lvcentinvs (ML/LLM), Master in Intellectual Property and Digital Innovation at the University of Alicante initiated in 1994 as an academic response to the designation of Alicante as the seat of the former OHIM, currently the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the competent body for the registration of trademarks and designs in the European Union. Today, more than two decades later, the Magister Lvcentinvs is one of the most prestigious European programmes in this field with students from all over the world.

Magister Lvcentinvs, Master in Intellectual Property and Digital Innovation of the UA – University of Alicante, ranked as the best Master in Specialised Law. El Mundo has published the 2024 edition of the ranking of the best masters in Spain in which the Magister Lvcentinvs is ranked in its 30th anniversary at the first position.
INTRODUCTION

Magister Lvcentinvs

The MASTER IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND DIGITAL INNOVATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE Magister Lvcentinvs completed 30 editions in 2023 and is among the most prestigious European programmes in Intellectual Property. In order to provide this course, it has the collaboration of a large group of academic and professional institutions, as well as national and international organisations, including among many others: the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO), the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO), the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO)…, etc., as well as magistrates specialised in intellectual property, professors, lawyers, businessmen and other experts in the field. The sessions of the Magister are experimental, including practical sessions, seminars, mock trials and public presentations by the students, concluding with the elaboration of a Master’s Thesis (TFM). The Magister has a clear international dimension, which is reflected both in the diversity of the students and in the composition of the teaching staff, offering a unique opportunity to be immersed in the globalized world of intellectual property without frontiers.

STUDIES

Modules

MODULE I

PATENTS, TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND DIGITAL INNOVATIONS

Study of the legal regime of patents in national, European and international legislation. Special attention will be granted to innovations in the digital market and the effects of the use of disruptive technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, big data, blockchain, the use of electronic signatures and data protection regulations.

MODULE II

TRADE MARKS and DESIGNS

Study of the regulatory regime in national, European and international legislation for distinctive signs and innovations for shapes that are essential for operators in both the physical and digital economic market, such as: trade marks, trade names, domain names and designs.

MODULE III

COPYRIGHT AND COMPETITION

Study of the regulatory regime in national, European and international legislation of the copyright of operators in both the physical and digital market and their interference with other rights. Special attention will be granted to copyright infringements in the online audio-visual industry, as well as to the legal regime of digital platforms.

MODULE IV

LEGAL REGIME OF PLANT BREEDING AND DISTINCTIVE QUALITY SIGNS

Study of the national, European and international legal regime of intellectual property rights in the agricultural and food industry. Special attention will be granted to plant varieties, plant patents, and quality signs as geographical indications, collective and certification marks, other quality schemes, and advertising regulation as an essential tool for the protection of the different intellectual property rights.

The teaching is focused on professional training in a globalised world, offering a comprehensive vision of intellectual property addressed to different profiles (lawyers, economists, engineers, translators...).

PRACTICE-ORIENTED TRAINING

The Magister Lvcentinvs has an experimental training, in which the focus is on practical sessions, public presentations, seminars, workshops and mock trials under the supervision of specialists in the field.

PERSONALIZED ASSISTANCE

The Magister offers students individual tutoring developed by the coordinators of the modules and individual tutors, ensuring a more individual approach to each student.

The Magister Lvcentinvs has a strong international dimension, both in terms of the background of its students and the structure of its teaching staff.

The Magister Lvcentinvs is a founding member of the Pan European Seal Programme, with EUIPO and EPO.

Team

The Master in Intellectual Property and Digital Innovation, Magister Lvcentinvs, organised by the Department of Business Law. It is composed of Scientific Council and an Academic Council, as well as the Heads of the different modules, combining academic and professional skills, including leading experts in the field of Intellectual Property and Digital Innovation.

The Scientific Council is chaired by Dr. António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office and Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Alicante.

Enrolment

Candidates for enrolment in the Master in Intellectual Property and Digital Innovation, Magister Lvcentinvs, must hold an Official Higher Education Degree, have a working knowledge of English and Spanish and be shortlisted by the Selection Committee. The Magister offers a limited number of places in order to ensure excellence in the training and supervision of students.

Scholarships

Each year the Magister Lvcentinvs offers up to 2 scholarships covering half the amount of the tuition fees paid by the student following the criteria established by the University of Alicante. These criteria will take into account the student’s academic and economic circumstances.
